Eat that Carl's Jr. !!!

To Whom It May Concern:

My name is Rachael and I am writing in regards to the advertising strategy that Carl’s Jr. and Hardees have been using for some time now. It is extremely unfortunate that your company has decided that the best way to bring in a customer is to use profane commercials. Your commercials most frequently depict a scantily clad woman eating an extremely large hamburger of some kind. Not only is it a ridiculous notion to suggest that a woman with a very small physique would even take a single bite of that burger, but it is ridiculous and offensive that she is nearly naked or is somehow aroused by eating a hamburger!!

I understand that these images are memorable for some and that this strategy is an easy way for your company to make a dollar, but you should also know it is a very quick way to LOSE a dollar as well. I am a wife and mother and REFUSE to eat at any of your franchises because my family and I are extremely offended by the commercials you use. I know I am not the only one who feels this way but perhaps I am only one of the few who will say something to you.

Using a naked woman to sell your hamburgers only says that your food is not that good and you therefore need to sell the idea of eating being sexy in order to increase your sales. I am not sure if you are aware or not, but your commercials are only appealing to a small group of customers; men. Women do not care how attractive the model is and they are definitely not aroused by the idea of a nearly nude woman eating a high-calorie, high-fat hamburger. The only reason that I remember your commercials is because I was so upset and bothered by the message. It is extremely degrading to women to be objectified in such a manner and thought of nothing more than a piece of meat used to make money for a company who sells fast food. Unfortunately we live in a society where many companies portray women as idiotic sex icons to be used at the whim of any man. No matter if he is good looking, intelligent, successful, thoughtful etc.; he just needs to be a man. This message is sent to men of all ages that women have nothing to offer to society except their bodies. This also sends to message to women and girls that in order to be successful or to get attention you need to exploit yourself. Shame on the women who are in your commercials and are willing to behave in such a way that diminishes all of the other attributes that make them unique individuals with thoughts and feelings. My guess is that they are either so desperate for a job that they would be in yours or enough people have told them that they can only make it in “the business” by selling their bodies and that there is nothing wrong with doing that.

If you had a good sales strategy you would be trying to appeal more to women, specifically mothers because they are more often than not in charge of the meals for their families. Instead of bringing in one man you could be bringing in a family of four. That is FOUR TIMES the amount of purchases/money that you would have made bringing in the single man. While I am no marketing genius it makes sense to me that you would want to attract the largest crowd.

As a conscious consumer I am asking you to reevaluate your marketing strategy and decide if you will be a company who has moral grounding in your marketing stratagem. Until then, you will not have my business and I will continue to discourage others from purchasing your products.

Music

The last few weeks of class have been HEINOUS! More papers than I care to remember writing, finishing an Independent Study class, a test, quizzes, reading and a myriad of other assignments. I have been SO trunky this semester and I was totally stressing about how I was going to get it all done. I amped up my "spiritual muscles" and decided that to do well temporally I needed to be doing even better spiritually. So as part of my "workout" I started listening to the MOTAB station on Pandora. Everytime I sat down to work on an assignment I would turn the station on. I think we read a study in this class or another one that said people score better on tests etc when there is background noise. Well I chose the ultimate background noise and the results were amazing! I noticed that I had a longer attention span and thoughts came more easily to me than ever before. I know a lot of that was divine help, but wow, I love you MOTAB. As I was working on all of these papers I thought to myself, "I will definitely do this next semester". Then I thought, "Oh wait! There IS no next semester!" wooohoooo!!!

Purge the media

As graduation draws nearer, my husband and I are planning on moving to AZ. We will be living in my father-in-laws house that is empty right now. When we move we'll be media-less. No tv, no internet. The road that the house is on is not wired for wireless internet for whatever reason. How sad is it that I am WORRIED about what I will do with myself! But I am kind of looking forward to it for a little while. More time to play with my daughter, prepare for our baby, read, learn to sew or a new hobby. Media does a lot of good, but maybe going without it will be even better. Hey, if the Duggars can do it, so can I.

Shame on You Hardee's/ Carl's Jr.

My mom sent me this email and I am planning on calling tomorrow. You can call or email. we have been talking a lot about body image and exploitation of women. This is a perfect example of how women are being portrayed in media. It is also a good example of people standing up to disgusting people who make commercials like this.

After two weeks and tens of thousands of phone calls to Hardee's and Carl's Jr. headquarters, the company continues to air its sleazy Pattymelt TV commercial. Bluntly put, this company has no respect for family values and common decency.

Click here if you need to see this ad before taking action (Warning: This ad is offensive and provided only for the purpose of educating our members).

The bottom line is...Hardee's and Carl's Jr.'s trashy pornographic advertising is a reflection of the company leaders' attitude towards women and children.

I hope you will get involved and make your voice heard. Otherwise, it will only get worse.

Take Action

The company is blocking emails from our system, but you can send your own personal email to Brad Haley, executive vice-president of marketing. His email address is bhaley@ckr.com. His direct office phone number is 314-259-6225.

1. Call the Hardee's and Carl's Jr. consumer relations department at 1-877-799-STAR (7827). Tell them you don't do business with pornographers and won't be buying from Hardee's or Carl's Jr. until they stop their sexploitation.
Here's some additional contact information:
CKE Restaurants - Hardee's, Carl's Jr.
Chairman William P. Foley II

2. Call your local Hardee's or Carl's Jr. store and let them know you find the commercial offensive and disrespectful to your family. They may tell you they don't control advertising, but they need to hear that it's hurting their local business. (Managers and owners do have influence with corporate decision makers)

3. Send this email to as many of your friends as possible so we can start a real grassroots campaign to make a difference in the stronghold of disregard for family values?

My tv habits

So... I've been watching Once Upon A Time and at first I liked it. I mean, I still like it, but I am quickly losing interest. As part of the microwave generation I am looking for quick fixes. And ALL season, this show is just building and building and BUILDING all the problems. I don't think ONE thing has been resolved at all!

I was thinking about it and thought, "Why can't I just enjoy the stories yada yada yada." But I really can't! I need SOMETHING to work out. At least two people are "missing", who is that writer guy, what the heck is up with Mr. Gold and someone tell Mary Margaret to grow her hair out!!

But I think it's part of tv today. Lots of shows just build up the suspense all season long, but even then I at least feel like they get closer to solving problems (24 was my worst nightmare and I can't even try to watch Lost). Throw me a bone ABC!

Speaking of which ABC, I hate your new show GCB. I haven't even watched it but I FINALLY found out that it stands for Good Christian B*******'s! How rude! Do you know how much of an oxy moron that is? Yea, probably. Once again, the media making women look like slutty, mean idiots. Thanks.

Using Media to Give a Shout Out

I would like to give a shout out to all of the Many, MANY things I used to get me through the first 16 weeks of my pregnancy. Yikes, it was rough.

First of all, thank you Unisom and Vitamin B6. Even though I wanted to sleep til noon you helped me keep most of my food down. Thanks

Lemon Drops, you were my first saving grace. I don't know what it is about lemon flavor, but you kept away a lot of feelings of "ugh" and "bleck" and even a few "Where's the bathroom!!!"s. Thanks

Peppermint Tea, you surprised me. I got sick of you kind of fast but you still did some good. Thanks

Gum! How I love thee! You make those pains after eating disappear. I still love you.

Diet Soda, My baby might come out with a third eye or something, but you tasted oh so good in times of desperation and your carbonation settled my tummy! Thanks!

Body, if this new baby is even close to being as cute as this one I will forgive you for putting me through heck my last semester of college.

Let's go to the Movies!

We took our almost 2 year-old to the movies this weekend. We saw the Muppets, hoping she would love it because she loves Sesame St. I know some would call me a bad mom for taking my daughter under 2 to see a movie (or let her watch a second of tv). But to them I say, "WHATEVS"!

For her, it was magical. She sat in a little booster seat so she could see over the seat in front of her. We gave her a little cup of popcorn. When the previews came up she was totally captivated and kept saying, "oh, wow!" It was seriously one of the cutest things I've ever seen. Seeing her cute little chubby cheeks chowing down on popcorn in the light of the movie screen was so darling! She didn't make it through the whole thing but overall she did so good! I'm excited to share more of these experiences with her.

Procrastinating

I should be studying for this midterm right now. But it always seems that when I muster enough will power to study for any test I think of a billion other things that need to be done. And since I haven't blogged this week I don't feel so bad putting the studying off!

Anyway, after Monday's lecture on social networking I realized it was time to go through my "friends" list and purge a few people. And by a few I mean like 100. I couldn't decide who I should delete. I was afraid that some friends would be offended or I would be weird if I kept people who I don't know that well but like to "stalk". Then I realized, no one sees this but me! So.... I went on a deleting frenzy. I made a few rules. Keep family and people I genuinely like. Get rid of people you have NEVER communicated with on FB. Save friends or people who might be good connections later on. And delete people who make me feel like my life sucks (cause I don't really talk to them anyway). And WOW! It felt so good! I could still delete a few more but then I would only have my mom and a few friends, so I'll save it until they make an annoying comment or something on a picture. It's funny how that works. People on FB walk a thin line with me now. If you say something that annoys me I'll delete you and we won't be friends anymore. So there! Yea, definitely relationally aggressive.

Other blogs

Most of the other blogs I read are friends and family and the occasional home decor blog for ideas. There is one however, that I read for a long time because it made me feel so much better about myself. It's a blog a girl created to make fun of those "perfect" Utah girls. I don't hold a grudge on anyone or think I am better than anyone else. But coming from FL, I felt a new pressure in UT to be "that girl". And no, most girls from UT are NOT like stereotype that has been created. But there are those few that make me roll my eyes and say, "WHY???" You know, the perfect body, perfect hair, mani/pedis every week, her husband in med school but they still have tons of money, gorgeous house they bought while still in college, vacations three times a year, perfect children etc etc etc. So I found this blog that made me see how ridiculous it is to try and attain this kind of lifestyle and that really, NO ONE lives this life! The blog is called Seriously So Blessed. http://seriouslysoblessed.blogspot.com/ It ended just over a year ago, but definitely worth reading. TRUST me, it will make you feel normal.

Once Upon a Time

Fine, I jumped on the bandwagon. I....uh....like it? I am for sure caught up in the Snow White story and was devastated when the witch killed the huntsman but other than that, I just don't know. I am excited to watch this week's episode and see what happens. Mostly I just don't know how long I can hold out on everything coming together. I mean, how many seasons can they have before they HAVE to kill the witch and get it all back together and return to fairy tale land. I don't know if I could watch it for more than 2 seasons and not be too stressed or bored. The new guy with the typewriter is interesting but I'm not sure where they plan on taking that. Anyway, just some thoughts...

HGTV and ESPN

HGTV is to me what ESPN is to my husband. I could watch it over and over again and NEVER get tired of it. Even though they talk about the same things and remodeling is a lot like new football games. Seeing who "won" or how the room looks in the end is the whole point of these things but getting to the "finish" is the most exciting part. And now I understand why my husband can watch reruns of old games. Even though I will NEVER admit that to him. Since I am in my first trimester I spend a lot of time on the couch watching tv. Which I would normally feel guilty for, but since I am taking a media class, it is perfectly appropriate. I love everything about this channel. The redo's on a budget. Buying your first house, selling your first house, redoing your lawn, who will get a better return on their renovations etc.

I am an HGTV junky. Don't judge

Pan Am

One of my other favorite shows is Pan Am. I love the sets, the clothes, the makeup, the glamour. I thought the show was going to be Desperate Housewives on a plane but I was pleasantly surprised at all the things going on. CIA, and the intertwined love stories keep me begging for more after every episode. I thought the show was doing great, of course there are "those scenes" because hey, the 60s were the beginning of the sexual revolution, no? Which by the way are never spelled out for you, you just guess what's going on. But this last episode made me SO MAD! I quit Glee because the homosexual agenda was a little too overwhelming for me. I have a hard time finding sitcoms that I like because most of them are too graphic or perverted. So when two GIRLS kissed in the latest episode of Pan Am, I screamed in horror and sadness because once again, a perfectly good show is now tainted with a homosexual agenda. Call me a bigot if you must, but UGH! I'm hesitant to watch this weeks episode because I. Am. Just. So. Bugged! When will there be shows without all the naughty?! Perhaps never again. Now I feel resigned to watch reruns of The Cosby Show so I don't have to be exposed to the naughty every week. (sigh) I suppose it's just a part of living in today.

Up All Night

Wow I heart this show so much. I was definitely skeptical at first because there haven't been too many excellent comedies out for a long time. BUT I think this show is really funny. It is definitely catered to people with young children (muah) and there are so many things I can relate to with this show. It's clean, which is another plus and is now conveniently showing after the Office on Thursday nights. I am SO happy they extended the season by two episodes! Will Arnett does a really good job at being the funny guy who doesn't try too hard to be funny. Christina Applegate is a peach and I love this relationship they have on screen. Sooooo... if you're a parent or even a married person I think you'll enjoy this. GO Parenthood!

I found Friday's discussion very interesting. I am excited to get to know more about the impact of media on families and human development. I am also interested to see the influences of media at different age groups particularly for toddlers. And just as an interesting fact, I didn't know the man who invented the TV was LDS! neat!
